While its core business is helping to fuel Canada’s nuclear industry, one of the area’s largest industrial employers is also helping to power student learning in Northumberland.
Cameco recently made a $10,000 donation to Northumberland Food For Thought (NFFT). The funds will go to help local schools purchase healthy foods through an online food ordering system, which allows them to replenish supplies more easily for their Student Nutrition Programs. The online food ordering system also includes delivery, which cuts down on trips to and from the grocery store.
“We are very fortunate to have great corporate citizens like Cameco that give back to their community, and in this case, ensure local students are well-nourished and able to learn to their full potential in school,” says Beth Kolisnyk, the community development coordinator with NFFT. “Cameco’s latest donation will not only help to stretch school budgets but will also increase the quality of food available in their programs.”
Cameco has been a long-time supporter of Northumberland Food For Thought, providing thousands of dollars in donations over the years.
“A full stomach is the fuel students need so they can focus on learning,” said Dale Clark, vice-president of Cameco’s Fuel Services Division. “The great work of Northumberland Food For Thought helps to make a positive difference to students and we are proud to support this important work.”
NFFT is the non-profit partnership that supports Student Nutrition Programs at schools across the region. These programs are free and voluntary, providing food to thousands of students in the area every day. Research shows Student Nutrition Programs can help support student academic success by removing a major obstacle – hunger – to learning, Kolisnyk adds.
Along with the support of residents, businesses and organizations, local Student Nutrition Programs also receive financial support from the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services through its lead local agency, the Peterborough Child and Family Centres.
