Alnwick/Haldimand Township Woman Has Had Enough of Parking

In Local

The starting of the fishing season isn’t sitting well with area residents in Alnwick/Haldimand Township.

Over the weekend, vehicles and trailers were lined up Dunette Landing Road from anglers launching their watercraft onto Rice Lake.

Lucy Sukhra is the property manager of a trailer park near the public boat launch and said the area is getting dangerous because vehicles being parked on both sides of the roadway, block access to some properties.

“This is clearly unsafe for both sides to be parked.”

At times trailers enter and exit and there isn’t enough room because of vehicles parking so close to the entrance.

The vehicles park so close to the culvert that it has been damaged and when it rains it overflows.

“Last week I had to stay here for 20-minutes while somebody was blocking my entrance.”

Sukhra said the people parking along the sides of the road are not local people.

“Local people are smart enough not to do that. They have a lot more respect.”

Trailers and vehicles were parked up the hill of Dunette Landing Road and Sukhra said it’s so dangerous there will be a collision at some point.

Sukhra said they’ve spoken to officials at Alnwick/Haldimand Township who stated there is nothing they can do, but advised to call OPP.

Northumberland OPP were on site on Sunday, April 24, 2022, but advised it’s more of a municipal/bylaw problem.

Sukhra said the residents don’t mind people coming to fish, but to just show some courtesy.

“Just have respect for other peoples property. Don’t block peoples driveway.”

Residents are calling on Alnwick/Haldimand officials to come down over the weekend and view for themselves the problem.

At times people have drove onto Sukhra’s property and leave their vehicle and trailer.

The last two weekends have been the worst this year, but residents fear it will only get worse.

“It’s not about what can we do now. Now it’s dangerous.”

Later in the afternoon, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry Officers held a spot check at the corner of Dunette Landing Road and Sandercock Road checking for licenses and other regulations.
