Pilot service will connect Northumberland County and surrounding communities to the GO network
David Piccini, MPP for Northumberland-Peterborough South was joined by Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation, Bob Crate, Warden of Northumberland County, and the Mayors of Northumberland to announce an on-demand pilot shuttle service that will make it easier for people to reach the GO network on Tuesday, April 19, 2022.
“This is a game changing announcement! After years of hard-work, our community will now have more options to access the GO network for the first time ever,” said David Piccini, MPP for Northumberland-Peterborough South. “The Government of Ontario is making sure that you can get where you want, when you want, and we’re getting you there faster.”
On behalf of the Province of Ontario, Metrolinx has partnered with Northumberland County to establish an on-demand pilot initiative that will offer a first-mile last-mile connection for commuters – connecting them to Oshawa GO and the broader GO network.
“As our government builds Ontario, we are also working closely with municipalities across the province to improve and expand their local transit services,” said Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation. “This partnership between Northumberland County and Metrolinx is an important step forward that will make it easier for people to get from Point A to Point B.”
The pilot shuttle service is expected to launch this summer and will connect the communities of Northumberland — from Trent Hills to Port Hope, with stops in Brighton and Cobourg — with each other and with GO service in Oshawa.
“This pilot is a unique opportunity for Northumberland County to enhance local transportation networks while also working with Metrolinx to build better, faster and easier connections to the Greater Golden Horseshoe,” said Bob Crate, Warden of Northumberland County. “This represents a critical step forward in providing sustainable regional transportation solutions for Northumberland residents. We thank the Province for this investment in a better connected Northumberland.”

· By 2051, population and employment figures in the Greater Golden Horseshoe are forecast to grow from 10 million to 14.9 million people, and 4.9 million to 7 million jobs, respectively.
· The region is a nationally significant hub for goods movement and business travel that sees $1.16 trillion in goods transported annually on its highways.
· Ontario is developing regional plans that will help build a better transportation system across the province. Earlier this year, Ontario released Connecting the GGH: A Transportation Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
