Cobourg Police Service Community Appreciation Awards

In Community, Local, Police Blotter

The Cobourg Police Service presented two community appreciation awards, recognizing selfless actions performed by people in the community.

At the Cobourg Police Services Board meeting on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, Hilary Caird, Laura Blake, and Shawn Torrison were recognized for their actions in assisting a community member in distress.

On December 26th, 2021, while out on a walk at the Cobourg Harbourfront, they heard the distress calls of a woman coming from the frigid waters of Lake Ontario. These three individuals worked
together to pull the woman from the lake. Thanks to their efforts, paramedics could provide further medical support to the woman when emergency services arrived, avoiding a potentially life threatening situation. Hillary, Laura, and Shawn were presented with certificates of appreciation and Chief’s Challenge Coins.

At yesterday’s board meeting, Tyler Woods was recognized for his actions on January 21st, 2022.

Upon arrival at a residential complex in the Town of Cobourg, Tyler jumped into action to assist the police. By blocking the exit to a laneway with his snowplow, Tyler helped limit the space for escape, allowing police to safely make an arrest and bring a dangerous interaction to an end. Tyler was presented with a certificate of appreciation and a Chief’s Challenge Coin.

“Our strength as a community is our resilience and our willingness to help others. We know our community is full of people doing good and selfless deeds every day. We are happy to have the
opportunity to recognize these actions when we have a chance.” – Chief Paul VandeGraaf, Cobourg Police Service
