As far as Cobourg Councillor Aaron Burchat is concerned, statistics from the town’s building department are a success story.

Burchat shared year-end statistics for the town’s building department (as well as for the fire department) at Monday’s council meeting.

For the building department, Burchat offered both December and 2021 stats.

December saw 17 building permits issued (including ones for seven new dwelling units) with an estimated construction value of more than $2.7-million.

And throughout 2021, the building department issued 513 permits (including ones for 87 new dwelling units) with an estimated construction value of more than $135-million. And the revenues realized through the process amounted to $997,000 for the town.

“So they were quite busy last year, and we saw a lot of projects, and hopefully the success continues this year,” Burchat said.

As for the fire department, 2021 saw 12 training exercises, 20 fire-prevention activities and 96 incidents.

“The province has released draft legislation Jan. 27 with respect to mandatory firefighter certification,” he added.

“The legislation is out for public comment until late February.”

Burchat said that the town is reviewing this proposed legislation and what it might mean going forward.
