The Cameco Fund for Mental Health has awarded nine grants, totaling $43,000 to Northumberland organizations working on mental-health projects for students and youth, families, front-line workers at local agencies and others.

The 2021 recipients are Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northumberland, KBI Inspire Magazine, Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation, Northumberland Hispanic Cultural Club, Rebound Child and Youth Services Inc., Transition House Coalition of Northumberland, and three schools – Burnham Public School, Grafton Public School and Cobourg Collegiate Institute.

Now in its third year, the Cameco Fund for Mental Health was established to provide direct assistance to organizations and groups that are working to address and support mental health in Northumberland County and area. Since 2019, it has distributed more than $150,000 to local organizations.

For 2021, a total of $43,000 was raised through the Cameco Charity Golf Package at Dalewood Golf Club and the virtual Step Up For Mental Health Run/Walk, along with matching amounts from Cameco and individual donations.

“These past two years have been especially challenging and, for many people, it has taken a toll on mental well-being,” Cameco Fuel Services Division Vice-President Dale Clark said in the press release.

“We are grateful to all of the individuals and sponsors who joined us in helping to raise these much-needed funds that will make a difference to mental-health services in our community.”

Following a November call for funding applications, submissions were adjudicated by a panel of representatives from Cameco, local mental-health experts and the Saskatoon Community Foundation – the administrator for the grants.
