A Cobourg artist is creating a community act of Remembrance along the lakeshore.
Jenny Duda started creating poppies along a fence just west of Hibernia Street by the boardwalk three days ago.
Since then the community has become involved creating their own poppies with material provided by Duda.
“I wanted people to be thoughtful of the upcoming Remembrance Day.”
“Instead of just me doing the work of weaving along the fence, I thought to involve the community that comes by to participate.”
A number of people have stopped by to chat with Duda and create a poppy.
“The idea behind it is to make more of a personal poppy that maybe someone will come by and check their poppy through the elements of all the different seasons.”
Duda describes the art as a “perspective piece to make people think about the difficulties that a veteran might have gone through, through all the seasons.”
The weather in November is always something to consider, changing drastically at times throughout the day.
“You just dress for it and stay tough.”
Terry and Gloria Ashcroft were walking along the boardwalk and decided to pitch-in and create a poppy.
“I think it’s wonderful,” said Gloria.
“It’s super that people are wanting to do this.”
Gloria’s father was in the Royal Air Force in England during World War II.
“He came home unscathed physically, but he surly had a number of issues. On Remembrance Day he was always really sad because he remembered all the buddies he lost during the war.”
“I’ve always felt how wonderful it is to be in a country that’s free like this one.”
Duda will be working on the artwork until November 10 and usually goes down to the area after 1 p.m. for anyone that would care to join. (Weather permitting she will be working on it this coming Saturday and Sunday)
