Cobourg Police – Twenty-Six People Charged With Speeding On First Day of School

In Local, Police Blotter

On Tuesday, September 7, 2021 schools were back in session, and members of the Cobourg Police
Service (CPS) were in the community conducting speed enforcement in school and community safety zones in
the Town of Cobourg.

There were 26 people who were charged under the Highway Traffic Act for speeding including a school bus operator.

Committed to keeping community roadways safe for drivers and pedestrians, members of the CPS continue to
develop the Selective Traffic Enforcement Project (STEP), which includes enhanced traffic patrols focusing on
different areas of enforcement and education each month. CPS September STEP focuses on a safe return to
school with a speed enforcement initiative called the “Back to School – In the Zone.”

The highest speed observed by officers was 79 km/h in a posted 40 km/h Community Safety Zone,
resulting in a Schedule II Fine (Fine Doubled), which is $583.00 with 4 Demerit Points. Today’s lowest speed was
59 km/h in a posted 40 km/h School Zone, resulting in a fine of $62.50 with 3 Demerit Points.

“We are committed to ensuring the roadways in our community are safe for everyone. Last week, we were out
educating and engaging with the community, reminding drivers of the specific rules in school zones as we geared
up for a safe return to school this week,” says Chief Paul VandeGraaf, Cobourg Police Service. “We urge everyone
to slow down and be alert. More important than just avoiding a ticket, slowing down will help reduce the chance
of causing a collision that could seriously injure someone. We need everyone’s help to ensure a safe return to
school. The first day illustrated clearly that we all have room to improve!”

Drivers are reminded to slow down and be observant around schools, crossing guard locations, local parks, and
whenever they see a school bus. Community Safety Zones surround most of the area schools as well as parks
and, as such, all Provincial Offence Notice fines are Schedule II. This means, when caught breaking the rules of
the road, the monetary fine is doubled.

Cobourg Police will continue to be out during peak hours, enforcing speed violations with a zero tolerance
approach in Community Safety Zones. Let’s work together to ensure a safe return to school for everyone. Please
slow down, be patient, and be aware of increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
