The Art Gallery of Northumberland held an exhibition celebration for an exhibit titled “Playing with Fire and Ice.

On Saturday, August 21, 2021 artist Amy Shackleton and graphic designer/animator Julian Brown were on-hand for the unveiling in the Permanent Collection Gallery with their collaborative exhibition.

In this exhibition, Shackleton creates a 50-foot-long mural depicting the lasting effects of climate change in Canada. Images of melting glaciers float amongst architectural elements, which are also met by the scorched limbs of a burning forest. Complete with the use of her signature drip painting technique, Shackleton transforms the Gallery’s walls into a fully immersive encounter. Stay grounded within the imagery or take one step further with Brown’s Augmented Reality experience. With the use of a smart device, viewers will be able to digitally extend the environment with animated forms of water and ice cascading from their screen.

These artworks remind us that we are all playing with fire. It is a call for action and a stark prediction for Canadian environmental futures.

The temporary exhibit will be on display until August 27, 2021 where the walls will be painted over.
