End of Summer Concert in Victoria Park Tentatively In The Works for Concert Band of Cobourg

It was literally music to the ears on Tuesday, August 3, 2021 as members of the Concert Band of Cobourg practised for the first time in months at their rehearsal building in Cobourg.

If fact, for Director of Music Paul Storms, it brought tears to his eyes as the woodwind and percussion sections started off with the march Hospitality.

“It feels absolutely awesome,” explained Storms during a short break.

Prior to the pandemic, through the summer months The Concert Band of Cobourg rehearses once a week. But that all ended in February 2020 when rehearsals stopped.

Tuesday night was the first time members of the band had got together for a rehearsal in 18 months. It was obvious to see the joy on their faces getting back together as a group.

“It’s super to have these guys (and gals) back tonight in a start which we hope will continue on for an outdoor concert in the near future.”

The rehearsal hall located on D’Arcy Street just north of McArthur Street in Cobourg can hold the entire band comprised of over 60 members, but due to COVID regulations and having members safely distanced, the rehearsal was held outside and will be done in two sessions.

Woodwind and percussion on Tuesday evening starting at 7 p.m. with brass and percussion taking place on Thursday evening.

As a member of the band for decades, Storms said it’s been extremely hard separated as the band is more like a family.

“It’s been incredibly disappointing at times.”

“But just getting us all back together and seeing the smiles on the faces and being able to stand in front of them and listen to them – it’s unbelievable.”

“This ice broke” approximately three weeks ago when band members discussed having outdoor rehearsals, “and decided to go for this and give the Town of Cobourg one concert to finish off the summer.”

If things keep going in a positive direction with COVID numbers, the Concert Band of Cobourg will be joined by the Cobourg Legion Pipes and Drums for a concert in Victoria Park on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 starting at 7 p.m.

“It’s tentative due to the conditions. If things go bad, we’ll obviously be shutting down again.”

Information/confirmation on the concert will be posted on the Town of Cobourg’s website, the Concert Band of Cobourg’s website along with Today’s Northumberland.
