Breaking News – Victoria Beach Closed In Cobourg As Numbers Reach Capacity

In Editor Choice, Local

Victoria Beach in Cobourg was closed on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 due to capacity limits being reached.

As a result of Covid, Cobourg Council adopted a resolution of a capacity of 1,200 people using the beach throughout the week. The beach is closed on weekends.

Municipal by-law officers checked the beach on Wednesday afternoon and the number well exceeded the 1,200 limit of people.

Deputy Director of Community Services, Teresa Behan was called down to the beach along with Town Clerk Brent Larmer and Emergency Planner Shannon Murphy to help facilitate the closure of the beach with by-law staff.

“Today is a very warm day and we have reached capacity of over 1,200 so we are closing the beach,” said Behan while the gates were closing.

“We’re following our Council motion that if it does reach our capacity, we do have to close it. It’s the first time its happened this year. It’s nice and sunny and everybody wants to be down here.”

Town staff closed two out of the three gates to the beach and staff weren’t allowing anyone arriving to enter the beach area.

Most people understood the capacity limits but there were a few people who were more vocal stating they drove two-hours to use the beach and were so dismayed they would not be returning again.

The beach will be re-opened on Thursday morning at 7 a.m.
