Port Hope Police Officer Honoured with OACP Award for School Resource Officer

A Port Hope Police Officer has been awarded with a Provincial Award for her service in the community.

Constable Tammie Staples was given the Ontario Association Chief’s of Police School Resource Officer Award of Excellence by Chief Bryant Wood on Monday, June 7, 2021 at the Port Hope Police Station.

“Although Tammie’s role does more than just encompass school resource officer. She does a fantastic job in our schools and with our local youth.”

Wood nominated Staples for the award.

“She’s a fantastic officer and the community all loves her and we’re really happy for her to win this.”

When Staples was told she’d won, “I was shocked. Very shocked, very grateful, very overwhelmed, very excited and truly excited.”

The veteran officer is well known throughout Port Hope for her community work and Staples has always stated it’s an honour to serve them in such a great town.

“Port Hope is such a wonderful and amazing place to live in.”

A school resource officer Staples takes part in a number of things including speaking about bullying, social media, safety, Values Influences and Peers for grade six, safety of graduation and many other subjects.

Along the way she’s made friends with many students and teachers.

“We’re just not there in a role to do the law. We’re there to make sure that they understand we truly care about them.”

Staples was also presented flowers on behalf of the Port Hope Police Services Board.
