Northumberland United Way’s Week of Caring

In Charity, Upcoming Events

If you’ve volunteered for Northumberland United Way’s Day of Caring in the past, you will remember a day full of energy, hard work, and helping those in need in our community. This year, due to the ongoing pandemic, our Day of Caring has evolved to become ‘Week of Caring for Northumberland Eats’ from Monday, June 7 to Friday, June 11, to raise dollars for our Northumberland Eats food voucher program.

“Although we are not able to come together in person this year, we are inviting residents across Northumberland County to join us in caring for our community in a different way; a way that extends beyond just one day and into a full week of caring,” says Bobbie Dawson, CEO, Northumberland United Way.

The Northumberland Eats voucher program, a partnership of Northumberland County and Northumberland United Way aims to provide food support to individuals and families while supporting local businesses across Northumberland County. Vouchers are distributed by participating social service organizations across the county to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity because of the COVID-19 pandemic. These vouchers can then be used like cash at nearly 20 participating restaurants and food vendors throughout our community.

Thank you to our annual Partners in Caring who have continued to support our Day of Caring for more than 20 years. This year, they have stepped up once again, to allocate their donations to Northumberland Eats. Thank you, Cameco Corporation, CpK Interior Products, SABIC, Akzo Nobel, and Lakefront Utilities. Vouchers funded by these organizations will begin to be distributed during Week of Caring to 24 local organizations.

“In a short period of time, the Northumberland Eats voucher program has had a profound impact on our community and on the residents who have used vouchers,” says Bobbie. “Studies have shown that when we address root issues like food insecurity, individuals can also experience improved physical and mental health, reduced stress, and increased confidence.”

All donations will directly support individuals in our community:

  • For a $25 donation, one individual will receive food vouchers for a week
  • For a $50 donation, one family will receive food vouchers for a week
  • For a $100 donation, one individual will receive food vouchers for a month, or a family will receive vouchers for two weeks, and so on.

Join us in celebrating ‘Week of Caring’ and help end food insecurity in our community. Donate today: www.mynuw.org/northumberland-eats/

Northumberland Eats is funded locally by Northumberland County and Northumberland United Way.
