Former Northumberland-Peterborough South MP Kim Rudd has announced she will not be a candidate in the next Federal election.
The local businesswoman was the first MP to represent the newly-created riding of Northumberland-Peterborough South (reconfigured from Northumberland-Quinte West). Once elected in 2015, she successfully advocated for the riding and brought into it millions of dollars worth of support – particularly in the area of economic development.
Rudd was also faithful in her attendance in multiple functions and meetings, indulging in what she considered one of the most important (and pleasurable) aspects of the job – engaging with people.
Her term in Ottawa saw her appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a role in which she proudly represented Canada both nationally and internationally. She also served on the Standing Committee on Finance.
Hers was a strong voice on a number of issues ranging from Medical Assistance In Dying to supports for small businesses and rural infrastructure. With a background as successful entrepreneur and community advocate, Rudd continued that work after the 2019 election in support of individuals, organizations and companies.
“Ms. Rudd earned both the respect and support of her colleagues and her constituents,” the announcement stated.
“She has always deeply cared for the riding she has lived in for over 40 years. Ms. Rudd has made the difficult decision not to run in the next election, and she will always be extremely grateful for the support she received from so many people during her time as Member of Parliament.”
“While I absolutely loved my role as your Member of Parliament and am very proud of the work I and my team did for those four years and beyond, sometimes life throws curve balls – and mine is no exception,” Rudd said in the press release.
“I was diagnosed with cancer last year and, while I feel great and have no intention of slowing down, I have re-evaluated my priorities and – like for each and every one of you – it is all about my time with my family.
“I want to thank all of the amazing people I have met along the way, those who have supported me not only professionally and politically but personally. ‘Thank you’ just seems like such an inadequate word.”
Rudd expressed her intention of renewing acquaintances and old ties on the campaign trail once the next election is called, as she works toward the election of the riding’s next Liberal MP.
“Rest assured I will continue to represent and support or communities and residents in whatever way I can,” she said.
