A Cobourg woman has had to wait three times outside her vehicle for people to come out of Metro because they parked in a handicapped spot.

The latest for Carol Anne Judd was on Thursday, April 22, 2021 when she parked in a accessible spot at Metro off of Elgin Street in Northumberland Mall.

Judd went in to get a few items from the store including flowers and when she came out shortly before 4 p.m., a SUV had parked so close to her van that she couldn’t get in.

“This is the third time in a row I’ve come to Metro and all three times somebody has parked in the space left for my wheelchair ramp to unfold so I can get into my vehicle.”

With temperatures hovering around 5 degrees Celsius, Judd could only wait outside for the person to come back to the vehicle.

Judd recalls years ago she lost the tip of her toe when she left a late cinema in Whitby and was stuck outside until the owner of the vehicle left the theatre.

The two lines painted on the pavement between the accessible sports are to small for any vehicle to park without the wheels extending into the accessible area.

As a result, Judd was literally “trapped” outside her vehicle.

When the owner of the vehicle came out of Metro she was unaware that she had blocked Judd in and apologized but stated, “Metro really should put something in there.”

“This happens everywhere in Cobourg, said Judd.

“I don’t understand it.”

Most of the time Judd said people have an excuse.

“They’ll argue or say it wasn’t very long. Some are quite legitimately sorry like this lady was for sure, but some are quite belligerent.”

One person even stated, “are you late to cash your welfare cheque?”

“I wish this weren’t true about society.”

Today’s Northumberland spoke to the manger of Metro who stated he would again notify the property manager of the issue.
