Thick Smoke Fills Hallway of Apartment Building From Drier Fire in Brighton

In Editor Choice, Local

Thick smoke filled the hallways of a apartment building in downtown Brighton on Friday evening after a drier fire.

Brighton Fire Chief Jim Smith said fire crews responded to a possible structure fire at a building on the corner of Chapel Street and Prince Edward Street at 8:49 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2021.

When fire crews arrived on scene, “there was a tremendous amount of smoke” coming from the back door and drier vent of the building which mainly houses seniors.

“We had crews enter in and rescue occupants out of the second floor, pulled them door to the first floor and then outside. Then (fire) crews went in and extinguished the drier in the basement.”

Crews from both halls in Brighton were called to the fire to help with extinguishing, ventilation and taking care of the 12 people who were displaced.

Smith said with drier fires, “they typically issue a lot of smoke, just because of the amount of lint in them, if they’re not cleaned on a regular basis, they’ll have a lot of lint which generates a lot of smoke. And it’s damp smoke so it’s really thick smoke.”

No one was injured in the fire.

At press time it was unknown the extent of the smoke damage to the building and Smith was unsure if residents could return.

NOTE:When interviewing the Fire Chief I stated that most people die from the fire, when it is actually most people die from the smoke and not the actual fire.
