Northumberland OPP – Fraudulent E-Mails By “Canada Post”

In Police Blotter

The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to inform the public regarding a “Canada Post” phishing scam that is currently circulating in our area.

Phishing refers to the fraudulent practice of sending emails or text messages, while acting as a reputable company with the intention of having individuals share personal information, such as credit card numbers and passwords. With the increase in online shopping these types of e-mails may appear to look legitimate but in fact they are not.

Fraudsters send these phishing or “brand-spoofing” messages, hoping consumers will give them only a quick glance before clicking. With one click of the link or attachment associated with the e-mail fraudsters start trying to collect personal or financial information – and a payment.

Always look very closely at the details of the message and check with a trusted friend or family member and contact the local Canada Post in your area using a number you have found, and not one that may be included in the e-mail you received.

Problems like identity theft are becoming more prevalent, and residents need to be more vigilant and ensure that they are secure by protecting their personal information.
