Hydro One Will Strengthen Power Reliability in Campbellford While Protecting the Osprey Population in Seymour Conservation Area

On Wednesday, February 20, 2021, Hydro One announced it will strengthen power reliability in Campbellford by replacing a sub- transmission structure, which carries power to several distribution stations that energize homes and businesses in the area. As part of the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, an osprey nest currently on this structure will be relocated to the new structure. This work will require a full closure of the Seymour Conservation Area on Wednesday, February 17 and Thursday, February 18.

“One of our environmental goals at Hydro One is to identify and incorporate practices that support local ecosystems and species. We are proud to help protect the local osprey population in Campbellford while completing this critical work,” said Elise Croll, Director, Environmental Services, Hydro One. “By incorporating sustainable practices in our day-to-day operations, we are looking out for the future of our customers, our people, Ontarians and our planet. We would like to thank residents in the area for their patience during this time.”

“We really appreciate the work that Hydro One is doing to relocate the osprey nest at Seymour Conservation Area,” said David Beamer, Conservation Lands Manager, Lower Trent Conservation. “Not only are they protecting the electrical grid, they are doing so in a way that will protect the ospreys’ lives while enhancing osprey nesting habitat.”

Ospreys tend to build their nests in tall, isolated trees but sometimes construct their homes on the top of electricity poles. As a general practice, the company limits interactions with ospreys as much as possible during the nesting season, which is from April to August.
