Convoy of School Buses Supports One of Their Own

In Editor Choice, Local

Over 60 bus drivers showed their support for their colleague on Thursday by driving past her house in Hamilton Township.

The group started in Port Hope at 10 a.m. and headed north on County Road 28 and then by the woman’s home on Oak Ridges Drive.

The woman was the driver of a school bus that had stopped to pick up two children on the 7th Line in Port Hope when they were struck by a vehicle around 8 a.m. on December 2.

Twelve-year-old Cormac Kerin died at the scene and his 10-year-old sister Shea was airlifted to Sick Kids hospital in Toronto where she remains.

Representatives at Century Transportation Ltd. in Port Hope where the driver works offered “no comment” on the convoy to support their driver, but Kim Goebel who is the Women’s Advocate for UNIFOR First Student Transportation Group said the support convoy was arranged by Century Transportation Limited.

Various school buses from Century, Rutherflo and First Student participated in the drive that was to honour and support the school bus driver named Amy.

“She’s overwhelmed with all the support and love she’s getting from everybody,” said Goebel.

Driver’s are trained in first aid so the school bus driver was the first person on scene to render medical care.

With the investigation continuing and it’s unknown what the cause was and if weather played a factor.

“The last thing any of us want to see is a child hit while we are waiting to pick them up.”

Goebel said Amy knows the amount of support the community has for her and is very appreciative.
