Six People Learn Driving Is A Privilege Not A Right After Being Charged With Stunt Driving In Northumberland

In Editor Choice, Local, Police Blotter

Six people over the weekend found out that driving is a privilege and not a right as they were charged with Stunt Driving on Highway 401.

On Saturday from shortly after 9 a.m. till shortly after 2 p.m. Northumberland OPP Constable Kevin McAllister charged five drivers with Stunt Driving.

The speeds ranged from 155 kph to 175 kph on Highway 401 which is posted at 100 kph. Tow trucks were called to the scene and the vehicles were impounded in four different compounds for seven days.

Stunt Driving falls under the Highway Traffic Act and is essentially any vehicle travelling 50 kph or more than the posted speed limit.

It carries a minimum fine of $2,000, the vehicle impounded for seven days and the person’s drivers license suspended for seven days.

On Sunday, McAllister was back at it again on the Highway 401, Wesleyville Road overpass and within five minutes, a vehicle was clocked at 155 kph.

The driver and passenger had to find other means to make their way back to Ottawa after the vehicle was impounded.

Northumberland OPP also charged two people with impaired driving on Saturday. One was in the Campbellford area and another was in the Brighton area.
