Today’s Northumberland Captures Images/Video of Bear in Port Hope

After two nights of bear sightings in Port Hope, Today’s Northumberland ventured out to see if it was possible to get photos of the elusive bear.

So far, the only photos were by security cameras in the Cumberland Street area of Port Hope.

There have been numerous sightings in the town, but for at least two days there have been sightings of a bear in the Cumberland Street, Highland Drive area of Port Hope.

It was obvious a number of people were also out looking for the bear. Everywhere since COVID-19 there seems to be little travel, but on this night, there were numerous vehicles driving around in the same area.

Port Hope resident Steve Mitchell notified Today’s Northumberland he spotted the bear on Silver Crescent just off Victoria Street North at approximately 9:45 p.m.

Mitchell and his family were driving around, like others looking for the bear when they spotted it around some garbage at the end of a driveway.

Today’s Northumberland arrived on scene to watch the bear slowly make its way back into the brush.

But only minutes later, the bear was once again spotted after it knocked down a garbage container on Silver Crescent.

This time, the bear seemed more interested in the bird feeder in the front yard of the home.

The bear knocked one of the cylinders out of the bird feeder and went away for a brief period of time before coming back and destroying the bird feeder.

It seemed to enjoy itself with the contents for the feeder for approximately 30-minutes.

After that it appeared to go back into the woods.

Port Hope Police advised residents to remove bird feeders from the area on the advice of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Police have been in contact with the MNRF, but at this point it’s not clear if the Ministry intends to set a trap so the bear can be safely removed from the area.

Today’s Northumberland spoke to numerous people watching the bear who indicated they can’t remember ever hearing of a bear coming into Port Hope.
