Exclusive – Cobourg Police – Over $13,000 Worth Of Illegal Drugs Found Inside Prisoner

In Editor Choice, Local

Cobourg Police have charged a suspect after over $13,000 of illegal drugs were found inside him in early December.

Police Chief Paul VandeGraaf said incident began when a 33-year-old man was arrested on a surety revocation warrant on Friday, December 13, 2019.

A surety revocation warrant is where a person (the surety) states they are no longer willing to take responsibility for an individual who is on bail from court.

VandeGraaf said it’s fairly rare for a surety to be revoked, but it does happen.

Because of the warrant, the individual was taken into custody and brought to a bail hearing at Cobourg Court on William Street.

“The Special Constables noticed there was something not right with him, so they brought him to Northumberland Hills Hospital,” said VandeGraaf.

“At which point several packets of a controlled substance were located.”

“It was revealed he had more and he was moved quickly to Peterborough where he was in ICU (Intensive Care Unit).”

There were a variety of packets of different drugs including Fentanyl, crystal meth (a strong and highly addictive drug that affects the central nervous system), heroin and tobacco that were inside the man that were allowed to pass naturally.

External (hidden on person in clothing)
0.8g Fentanyl
0.2g Meth
4.3g Marijuana
5.3g Tobacco

Internally he had a total of 77 wraps that were passed by him or brought out by the hospital:
6.46g Fentanyl (1 x wrap)
27.46g Heroin (2 wraps)
27.6g Crystal Meth (2 wraps)
64.96g Marijuana (40 x wraps)
127.26g Tobacco (32 x wraps including roll)

VandeGraaf said the man could have easily died with the amount of drugs in his body and what could have happened if he didn’t have the proper medical care.

“It was a great grab by the Special Constables noticing the medical distress he was in.”

“Northumberland Hills Hospital realized the nature and scope of what was happening and they were able to get him stabilized and remove some of the packets and then get him to Peterborough.”

Cobourg Police called the Special Investigations Unit, but they did not invoke their mandate.

It’s believed the drugs were destined to be sold inside jail.

The individual is out of medical danger and has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The investigation is continuing.
