Two officers were injured during a response involving a domestic disturbance in Oshawa last night.
On Sunday, December 15, 2019, at approximately 9:30 p.m., officers attended an apartment on Park Road South in Oshawa regarding a male wanted on an arrest warrant. Officers could hear the male and a female yelling loudly at each other inside the apartment.
Officers observed a female with facial injuries and were allowed entry into the apartment. Both parties were uncooperative with police and the female was removed for her safety. The 24-year-old male was uncooperative and then became combative with officers. He was subdued through the use of a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW). The female refused to go to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
While the accused was being checked by paramedics outside the apartment, another male attended and began videotaping the scene. He was shouting and swearing at officers and paramedics and was cautioned several times for causing a disturbance. The behaviour continued and while attempting to arrest the male, an officer slipped on the ice and twisted his ankle. The officer was taken to hospital and placed in an air cast for a sprained ankle. Officers arrested the videographer, charged him with Cause Disturbance and released him on a Promise to Appear. (19-276228)
While being held in the central cellblock, the 24-year-old male from the original call began banging his head against the cell wall and door.
While efforts were made to get him into a cruiser to go for treatment and a mental health assessment, one officer injured his hand. The officer was treated and released from hospital with minor injuries. The accused began striking his own head against the inside of the cruiser while on route to hospital.
The 24-year-old Oshawa male will be charged with Assault with a Weapon, Spousal Assault and Mischief to Property. He was held for a mental health assessment.
