The LAV III memorial at 700 D’Arcy Street was unveiled on Friday, November 8, 2019 in Cobourg.

Civilians, Legion members military members, cadets, the Concert Band of Cobourg and other dignitaries were in attendance.

“I would like to thank and pay special recognition to a family I have become familiar and had the opportunity to get to know this past year- Silver Cross family Ron and Dianne Knight who are here and thank you for being here in memory of your daughter Major Michelle Knight Mendes who unfortunately died overseas in her her second tour in Afghanistan,” said Cobourg Mayor John Henderson.

“Michelle attended high school in Cobourg, was the Rotary International exchange student, who was highly regarded for her dedication consideration and kindness. The lav three monument standing before you today means grounded in our community’s commitment.“

“To the men and women who served and scarified in this particular mission. Together we will also remain grounded in our commitment to remembering and honouring the Veterans especially those who continue today to serve our great country Canada.”

The LAV III is on the site of the former No. 26 Ordnance Depot of the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps from 1954 – 1970 (Canadian Forces Station Cobourg).

Administered by Canada Company, the LAV III Monument Program was established to commemorate Canada’s mission in Afghanistan. The LAV III’s are the iconic vehicles used during Canada’s mission in Afghanistan.

In 2018 the Town of Cobourg was awarded the LAV III Monument and will be one of over 30 communities across Canada to install a monument commemorating fallen military members and their families.

The Town of Cobourg would like to recognize and thank all those sponsors who have contributed to the project, including: Behan Construction, Blake Construction, Castleridge Concrete, Chadwick’s Towing & Repair Inc., CIMA +, Cressman Tree Maintenance & Landscaping Inc, Ex-ll Welding, Finlay Construction, Just In Time Sanitation, Kelly’s Excavating & Utilities, Lakeland Multi-Trade, Mayhew Graphics, New Amherst Homes, Northam Industrial Park, Proelectric, Randy and Solveig Barber, Rent All Centre Cobourg and Todd Cane.
