Peterborough County OPP – Severe Boat Collision on Stoney Lake

Male Deceased and Second Male Missing
(NORTH KAWARTHA TOWNSHIP, ON) – Members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and emergency crews were called to assist in a collision between 2 boats (3 persons were on board each vessel) on Stoney Lake on August 24, 2019 shortly before 9:30 p.m.

Witnesses located and transported 5 of the 6 of the occupants of the vessels to shore. Investigators were directed to the scene of the crash just off Northey’s Bay Road (Bedwell Drive) in Young’s Bay on Stoney Lake. Officers utilized marine units and a helicopter from the OPP aviation services however, efforts to locate a 31-year-old man from Mississauga were unsuccessful. Another 31-year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene.

The remaining 4 occupants of the involved boats were transported to an area hospital for injures which ranged from non-life threatening to serious.

OPP member trained in marine collision reconstruction will be working in the area today to take measurements, document the scene and collect evidence. In addition, OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU) will be attending the scene and will attempt to locate the missing boater. The cause of this collision remains under investigation.
