Breaking News – Former Cobourg Cop States Lack Of Officers Has Got Much Worse

In Editor Choice, Local

A former Cobourg Police officer has stated that lack of police officers has, “clearly become much worse.”

Christine Allen-Firth was a recruit the night Cobourg Police Constable Chris Garrett was murdered on May 15, 2004. Garrett was lured to the former hospital on Chapel Street in the early morning hours when the murderer called in a phoney robbery call.

As Garrett was taking notes from what was thought to be a victim, the murderer slashed Garrett’s throat.

Though mortally wounded, Garrett chased his attacker and struck him with the last bullet from his service weapon. The murderer was later arrested at Northumberland Hills Hospital where he went for treatment.

Allen-Firth was one of four officers working the early morning hours the night of Garrett’s death.

“I was 1 of 4 officers working in the Town of Cobourg during a tragic event 15 years ago,” she states on Facebook on Tuesday, July 9, 2019.

“I always thought to myself the lack of officers was insane. Fast forward 15 years and things have clearly become much worse.”

“Stay safe brothers and sisters in blue and have each other’s back.”

Allen-Firth is no longer with the Cobourg Police Service.

Her post comes after a Cobourg Police officer stated on Saturday, July 6, 2019, “absolutely insanity these days in policing.”

Davis stated he was one of two officers working in the town of 18,000 until 6 p.m.

Chair of the Cobourg Police Services Board, Dean Pepper responded to a citizen’s enquiry about policing in Cobourg stating in an e-mail, “I can assure you that public safety was not compromised during the weekend or any other time.”
