Terry Fox Public School in Cobourg Commemorates the 75th Anniversary D-Day Invasion

On June 6, 2019 Terry Fox School in Cobourg held a service to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion with a tree planting.

The tree planting today came from the desire of students to replace a vandalized Highway of Heroes tree.

Grade two students Carson Doucet and Landon Simpson took up the initiative by having hot dog sales at the school and raising just over $200 for the Highway of Heroes Living Tree Campaign that was presented to David Turnbull at a assembly.

Poppies were made by Mr. Mark Mitro and his Grade 7 class as they are learning to use a jig saw in the Makerspace of the school.

There will be a poppy to hang on each of the trees planted in memory of Heroes on the school yard.

The choir and primary students under the direction of Mrs. Sydney Brazalot sang “Oh Canada” and students, Lauren Rennie, Olivia Day and Danielle Bowers recited “In Flanders Fields”.

Ms. Pam Lancaster of GRCA and David Turnbull were instrumental in obtaining funding for 10 additional trees which will be planted on the school property on Saturday June 8.

Terry Fox School council, headed by Mrs. Jody Walker approved funding for the additional hero trees as part of a school yard renovation which will see many more trees planted over the coming years.

Educational Assistant Deb Wilton said, “this has been an amazing community effort where many people from all walks of life came together to remember the sacrifice of Canadian soldiers in all wars but in particular on this the 75th anniversary of D-Day.”
