In Editor Choice, Local

Damage is estimated at $50,000 following a kitchen fire in the Municipality of Port Hope on Thursday, May 16, 2019.

Firefighters received the call for a structure fire on Ganaraska Road at Gilmour Road, west of County Road 28 at approximately 5:25 p.m.

Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services Chief, C. Ryan Edgar said a pot was left on the stove when the owner went out for a short period of time.

Quick detection and a quick knockdown by firefighters prevented the fire from spreading from a dog died from smoke inhalation in the fire.

Because of renovations and proper fire separation it prevented smoke from spreading to the rest of the structure.

Edgar said although there is heavy smoke damage in the area of the kitchen, there was minor smoke damage to the other area of the residence.
