In Upcoming Events

Anne Sado, President of George Brown College for 15 years, will be guest speaker at the Canadian Federation of University Women – Northumberland scholarship fundraising luncheon May 8 at the Dalewood Golf Club.

Sado, a strong advocate of experiential learning, will be talking about “the transformation of the post-secondary education system.”

She will explore the changes shaping the system, how Ontario colleges have evolved in 50 years and what the future holds.

The 2013 Order of Canada recipient holds an MBA from the University of Toronto as well as a Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering. She was also awarded a Doctor of laws, honoris causa, from the University of Toronto in June 2011.

In 2014, she was recognized as one of Canada’s Top 25 Women of Influence and was inducted into the Women’s Executive Network (WXN) Hall of Fame 2014.

Last year, Sado, CM, MBA, LLD, PEng, was appointed an Honorary Colonel of the Governor General’s Horse Guards.

Funds raised by the luncheons since 1991 have provided scholarships and bursaries for numerous female Northumberland high school, college and university students.

In 2018, CFUW-N awarded six $750 scholarships to students attending the six Northumberland County high schools, plus two bursaries, $500 and $750, to students continuing their studies at Fleming College and Trent University respectively.

A one-time award of $1,000, in honour of CFUW’s 100th year, was given to a Ph.D. student at Trent University. Businesses and corporations are encouraged to make donations to the scholarship fund or to sponsor a table of local students to attend the event.
Tax receipts will be issued for donations. The community is invited to join us and support this event. Former CFUW-N guest speakers include Hazel McCallion, former mayor of Mississauga; Alia Hogben, executive director of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women; Helga Stephenson, award-winning film and media arts personality, and Joy Kogawa, a decorated Canadian author.
