Port Hope Area Initiative Work Continues Along Shoreline

In Editor Choice, Local

Work continues during the Port Hope Area Initiative involving the cleanup of approximately 1.2 million cubic metres of historic low-level radioactive waste from various sites in Port Hope.
Work at the east section of the West beach began this Fall with clearing and grubbing onsite. The buildings and underground tanks are scheduled for demolition this winter. This worksite is one of three areas included in the Waterfront package, which is scheduled to last over three construction seasons. The other two sites include 95 Mill Street and the Viaducts, said communications officer Bill Daly.
Demolition took place last week of the buildings at 95 Mill Street which precedes cleanup on that site.
The Port Hope Harbour will be cleaned up as part of the PHAI. This includes dredging the harbour and removing about 120,000 cubic metres of low-level radioactive waste. To facilitate this work, the inner harbour is being isolated from Lake Ontario through the installation of two wave attenuators and a turbidity curtain. The first of the two wave attenuators is currently being installed. The work at the harbour is expected to last over five construction seasons.
