Six members of a Brighton family lost everything after a fire ripped through their two storey home on Monday, November 19, 2018.
Brighton fire crews were called to the Ontario Street home at approximately 8 p.m.
Deputy Chief Jeff Ogden said when crews first arrived on scene there was heavy smoke coming from the basement and garage area.
“We tried to make entry into the basement, but we were unable to make full entry into the basement because of the heat and flames.”
Over 30 firefighters worked through the evening trying to gain the upper hand on the fire that spread from the basement to the second floor of the home.
Because the fire burned through the floors of the home it became to dangerous for crews to make entry into the building.
“It’s a stubborn fire,” said Ogden.
Firefighters worked through the evening trying to knock down the fire from the outside, but the fire re-kindled several times.
Ogden credits working smoke alarms with alerting the six occupants (three adults) to the fire.
Crews from Cramahe Township, Trent Hills and Hamilton Township were called in to help.
Damages could reach upwards of $800,000 and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been notified.
