A neighbour reporting smoke coming from the eaves turned into a fully engulfed house fire in Cramahe Township on October 15, 2018.
Firefighters responded at 2:50 p.m. to reports of a structure fire. When they arrived on scene, heavy smoke and flames were coming from the two storey home on Van Wicklin Lane just off Little Lake Road east of Colborne
At the time it was unsure if the home was occupied or not, but the fire was to involved for an interior attack.
Brighton, Hamilton Township, Alnwick/Haldimand Township and Trent Hills were also called to the scene for tanker support to shuttle water to the scene.
Assistant Chief Tim Burgess spoke to Today’s Northumberland at 8 p.m. and said all four fire departments are still on scene trying to extinguish the flames and shuttling water.
“Heavy flames stopped us from gaining entry,” said Burgess.
It’s unknown whether the house was occupied, but Burgess said, “there was nobody outside when we arrived on scene.”
“It was a pretty intense fire inside and there was power (electricity) going inside to the building.”
“All our fire operations have been outside as we could not gain entry.”
Burgess said because of the intensity of the fire, it was to dangerous for firefighters to have an interior attack.
“All we have are windows to go through.”
As of 8 p.m. firefighters still had not been able to go inside the building and are still trying to douse the flames.
“We can’t look at anything until we can get inside.”
Burgess said they still haven’t been able to contact the owners of the home.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been contacted as a result of the fire.
