Safe Communities Vision is to make Northumberland County the safest and healthiest place to live, learn, work, and play. In support of our vision, Safe Communities Northumberland will be holding a public event called “Community Connections Expo: Inspiring Youth, Educating Service Providers, Connecting Families” on Wednesday October 17th at the Northumberland Mall.
Our target audiences are:
• Youth – “Empowering and Educating” youth to take control of their lives. This will be the stepping stone for an ongoing educational program for grade 10 students from across the county. • Service Providers –“Nurturing Partnerships” To promote working and training together. • Community – “Educating and Connecting Families” resources and presentations geared for parents on issues impacting our youth.

The goal is to help youth connect to the services and places that will impact their future. Promote positive mental health and resiliency for our youth and their families. Develop and nurture a community-based approach to problem solving. Connect community service providers to youth and their families.
Keynote speakers will assist in Bridging the Gaps for youth in our community, bringing to the forefront Northumberland’s unique needs and challenges faced not only by youth and their families but by organizations that are striving to support them.
Our Keynote speakers include:
• Ross Szabo – Ross teaches students about the complexities of mental health issues and empowers them to seek help or help their friends seek help. Most mental health challenges are highly treatable, but too often remain hidden in silence preventing people from achieving the recovery they are capable of.

• Cheryl Pounder – Believing that learning from our successes, as well as our failures, is the key to staying on the path toward excellence, Cheryl shows audiences that true achievement is found on the way to winning gold. She will speak about: The Pursuit of Excellence, Courage to Overcome Adversity, Leadership & Teamwork, ‘Growing for Gold’ and Breaking Down Barriers to Mental Health.

• Covenant House – Deglamourizes street life and discusses the struggle homeless youth face – how they’re driven to steal, sell drugs or worse, targeted by predators and often trading their dignity to survive. Students also participate in an activity that highlights the hardship young people face while trying to live independently, without family support, education or a career.

The Expo will encompass a wide variety of activities designed to empower our youth to take charge of their lives and become more connected to the community in which they live.
