A 12-year-old Oshawa boy owes his life to a citizen and members of the Canadian Coast Guard crew Cape Mercy.
On Saturday, July 21, 2018 a person walking along the east pier in Cobourg noticed a person in distress in the water off the Cobourg beach.
There were high winds and high waves at the time the person spotted the person who was yelling for help.
The citizen on the pier began calling for help which attracted the attention of a crew member of the Cape Mercy which is stationed in Cobourg.
Crew members immediately got in their rescue craft and pulled the boy from the rough water.
At the time the boy was beyond the buoys that are in the water for swimmers not to venture beyond.
The boy was taken to hospital to be checked over but appeared to be ok.
If not for the quick actions of the person who spotted the boy in trouble and the crew members of the Cape Mercy a day at the beach may have ended in tragedy.
It’s unknown if the boy was reported missing to life guards on the beach.
