A baby beaver was rescued on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at the Port Hope fish ladder.
Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue animal attendant Emily Hutchinson said when she arrived on site at approximately 10 a.m. she noticed a baby beaver on a small ledge between the opening for the fish ladder and the waterfall.
“We started exploring options on how to save it and luckily in the end we found two men near the waterfront in Port Hope who had a long fishing net.”
Hutchinson took the two men up to the fish ladder and with their help, and net they ended up scooping up the beaver.
“He was petrified. He wasn’t moving at all. We weren’t sure he was even alive, but we saw him twitch and knew he was good.”
Hutchinson took the beaver back to the Soper Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre where they will pair the beaver with another one they recently rescued less than two weeks ago.
“We’re hoping right now to raise enough money to get a pond for the two of them so they will be rehabilitated in two to three years.”
