Port Hope Police Media Release – Attempt Break and Enter/Man Charged with Assault and Mischief

Attempt break and enter.

On the 25th of June 2018 shortly after 7:00am Port Hope Police were called to a residence in the Choate Road/Ramsey Street area after a Home owner reported an attempt entry into the residence.  The entry is believed to have occurred on the 23rd of June in the early morning hours. The resident there heard someone trying to get into a basement window. When the lights were turned on the person fled the area. The home owner noted the screen off the window no entry was gained.  Port Hope Police recommends citizens call Police right away if they feel there is a crime being committed rather than wait a few days.

Man charged with assault and mischief

A 35 year old man is facing charges after Port Hope Police were called a disturbance in the Hope Street/Peter Street area. Shortly after 7:00pm Police attended the residence.  Once there they heard a commotion going on the second floor of the residence which has been converted to apartments.  Police forced entry into the residence and confronted a man who was holding table legs. He was eventually taken into custody.  Police allege the man started smashing holes in the walls and doors of this apartment after an argument ensued with the home owner and a person identified as a tenant.  This man also is accused of punching the other man in the face. Joel Bemma of no fixed address is charged with assault causing bodily harm and mischief. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
