UPDATED – Cobourg Firefighters and Northumberland County Paramedics Rescue Elderly Man Who Fell Down Embankment

A elderly man who fell down a 25-foot embankment on Thursday, June 21, 2018 was rescued by Cobourg Firefighters and Northumberland County paramedics.
Cobourg firefighters received the call 5:19 p.m. to reports of the man believed to be in his 80’s fell down the embankment on Wilmott Street by Lucas Point Park that overlooks Lake Ontario.
Cobourg Fire Department Captain said when they initially got the call it was for a “medical call” but when fire crews were informed the person had gone down a 25-foot embankment the call was upgraded with all firefighters responding.
“You train, you train and it was here.”
Firefighters tied off ropes and lowered a stretcher while paramedics stabilized the patient who appeared to be conscious and speaking to rescuers throughout.
“That’s one of the things we do is assess the person’s level on consciousness, their condition and come up with an action plan based on the urgency.”
One person told Today’s Northumberland the person went around a fenced off area and was partially down the embankment when he fell with a shovel.
People nearby witnessed the accident and called 9-1-1.
Firefighters worked with Northumberland County Paramedics to remove the man from the shoreline and he was placed in an ambulance and taken to Northumberland Hills Hospital.
In his 26-year career Schroeder said this was his first type of rescue but added, “we all came together as a team and it seemed to work fairly smoothly.”
