Only hours after a devastating fire donations are coming in for victims of the fire.
It appears people and pets living in 24-units will be displaced for a long period of time after a fire broke out in a third floor apartment on Wellingston Street and spread to the entire roof.
Firefighters rescued numerous pets but it’s believed some may have perished in the blaze.
Port Hope Police are holding the scene until Friday when the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office will investigate to try and determine a cause.
Port Hope Police Constable Tammie Staples said, “our great community has come together in such a tragedy.”
Clothing for adults and children, toys, food and more.
“It’s a great start and there will be a lot more over the weekend,” said Staples.
Community member Avril Ewing was at home, but saw posts on social media about the major fire.
“Our neighbours homes are burning down right before my eyes.”
“I knew we had to mobilize quickly and get organized quickly.”
Ewing phoned the town hall and the police station to see what could be done.
“Both immediately said yes.”
Then she started seeing what the victims would need in terms of clothing and other items.
“We know the people effected by the fire are being taken care of tonight, but long term they are going to need help and the support of the community.”
The victims will need clothes of all sizes, everything possible, including toys.
“Take the moment to clean out your closet.”
“I know things are going to be coming in over the weekend.”
Ewing said there are currently 35 people being sheltered for 72-hours, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that is the number of people effected because others may have went to relatives.
Pets and animals that can’t go to other homes have been taken to shelters until people can figure out what their next steps will be in the coming days.
Jim Pizza, Queenies Bakeries, McDonald’s, Giant Tiger and Pharmasave have made generous donations.
“The support in this town has been incredible,” said Staples.
“The people, town council, staff at the rec centre, we’ve got buses for people who need to go from the scene, to the rec centre, to the hotel to Walmart to get supplies.. It’s amazing how a small town comes together.”
For anyone who wishes to donate clothing, toys, that the victims will need they can drop it off at the Port Hope Police Station, anytime day or night, or the Port Hope Town Hall on Queen Street during regular business hours.
