Results of Gun Amnesty Program

In Editor Choice, Local

The Cobourg Police Service, in collaboration with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), provided a Gun Amnesty program during the month of April. As a result of the Gun Amnesty program, 19 firearms and a quantity of ammunition was turned in.

The Gun Amnesty Program was for any Ontario resident who wanted to voluntarily surrender unwanted or illegally-owned firearms, weapons, accessories or ammunition. The Gun Amnesty applied to any documented or undocumented firearms, and other weapons and accessories. The Cobourg Police Service also accepted any amount of unwanted ammunition.

The Amnesty is a way to provide citizens with a safe way to surrender weapons and enhance public safety by reducing the number of firearms in our communities. During the Amnesty, Police did not recommend weapons-related Criminal Code charges that might otherwise apply to people who are turning in these items.
*Please note there was no Amnesty offered for people who turned in weapons that were used in the commission of a crime. No anonymous submissions were accepted.
