The 2022-2023 West Northumberland Wild U11B girls hockey team was celebrated at Victoria Hall on Tuesday night for their league and provincial championship wins this past spring.

After capturing the Ontario Women’s Hockey League Southern Division title, the team went on to win the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championship.

The players and coaches were honoured with a plaque presented by Mayor Lucas Cleveland, Deputy Mayor Nicole Beatty and councillors Miriam Mutton and Randy Barber.

Victoria Hall was lit up outside with West Northumberland Wild colours.

Traditionally, teams are recognized at a council meeting, but timing proved challenging with the players now spread over three teams at the U11 and U13 levels.

Team members were Maelle Appleman, Mya Binkley, Haylee Brooking, Zara Caletti, Greta Coyle, Blythe Crowley, Isabella Gillard, Presley Giroux, Aliviah Harmon, Audrey Leismaster, Reese Lewis, Annemieke Loohuizen, Addley McCullough, Evelyn Semlitch, Blakely Simpson, Alia Smith and Madeline Walker.

The staff included head coach Adele Appleman, assistant coach Chad Leismaster, trainers Ryan Binkley, Jeff Crowley, Hope Giroux and manager Kim Caletti.

St. Mary golfers Anna Crowley and Ben McNee have qualified for next week’s Central Ontario high school championships in Lindsay.

Tuesday at the Kawartha championships in Little Britain, Crowley shot 88 and McNee 85 in windy conditions to advance.

The Cobourg Cougars are in Buffalo for the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Governors Showcase which attracts scouts from NHL, major junior, NCAA and Canadian university teams.

The Cougars take on the Leamington Flyers Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and Thursday face the Mississauga Chargers at 4:30 p.m. The games count toward the regular season standings.
