Brief Stopover in Victoria Park on Cobourg Encampment Tour 2023

In Local

The latest stop on the Cobourg Encampment Tour 2023 lasted only a evening until it was removed.

With the Province stepping in and issuing a trespass notice to encampment residents at the former Brookside Youth Centre on Friday, September 8, 2023, some encampment residents set up in Victoria Park at the corner of McGill and King Street East. The residents even brought the sign that was hanging by trees that was at the Brookside encampment.

By-law officers accompanied by police showed up on Friday evening to let the residents know they would be issued a trespass notice after one encampment resident stated more would be coming to Victoria Park.

Shortly after 1 p.m. by-law officers showed up once again to make sure encampment residents were leaving Victoria Park. Volunteers stayed until after the residents had left and made sure the area where the encampment was in the park was clean.

It’s believed the residents moved back to the former Brookside Youth Centre.

Northumberland County stated, “There has consistently been space available within the shelter system over the last several months.”
