The Cobourg Yacht Club held their annual sail past on Sunday, June 11, 2023.
Cobourg Yacht Club Commodore Liz Caughey said the sail past is a chance for the Commodore to throw a party for the sailors.
“It comes down from see faring boats where there was a tradition of thanking God and a blessing of the fleet for all that we’ve been given.”
Before the boats left Cobourg Harbour, Father Matt McMillan presided over a ceremony in front of the Cobourg Yacht Club with members along with Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland, councillors Adam Bureau, Randy Barber, and members of the Canadian Coast Guard.
Then it was off to the boats and onto Lake Ontario for the sail past by the Commodore who saluted each of the boats as they sailed past.
Then it was back to port for a chance for fellowship.
Cleveland went out with the Coast Guard cutter Cape Rescue and said Cobourg is very fortunate to have the Coast Guard station.
Cleveland said he just arrived back from Chicago for the Mayor’s conference concerning the Great Lakes.
“It was good working with mayors about coastal resiliency and then getting here and talking about coastal resiliency with the guys (crew).”
“One the big things I’m really focused on is getting money from different levels of government for the pier replacement and I think it’s just really appropriate it’s all sort of happening right now.”
The repairing of the pier will likely cost anywhere from $18 to $30 million.
“It’s a project Cobourg can’t afford on its own.”
Cleveland said as mayor he needs to spend time, “building support for getting our pier fixed.”
“It’s time to get the money and it’s time to show the money.”
With Cobourg being a very popular port along Lake Ontario, Cleveland said an event like on Sunday, repairing the pier, “is a huge priority for me.”
