GRCA Advises Special Weather Statement

In Local

The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority advises that Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for our area. A low pressure system will move into the region on Thursday bringing potentially heavy rainfall and gusty winds that will last into Friday.

Total rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 mm are expected across the region beginning tomorrow morning and continuing through the day. Mild temperatures in the 5 to 7°C range will cause snowmelt that will add runoff and combine with the rain to swell local streams.  While no flooding is anticipated, all streams within the Ganaraska region will experience some rise in water levels and flows, especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges.

Weak ice cover on streams and ponds may break up under high flows and make its way out to Lake Ontario with a low potential for ice jams. High winds are also expected throughout this event which will result in waves of 1.5 to 2m in height along the Lake Ontario shoreline through Friday.

The Conservation Authority is reminding residents to exercise caution around all water bodies as high levels of runoff and slippery stream banks can result in dangerous conditions. Please alert any children in your care of these hazards.

This Watershed Conditions Statement will be in effect through Saturday, February 11th, 2023. Conservation Authority staff will continue to monitor watershed conditions and provide updates as necessary. Should you have any questions or wish to report flooding, please contact the following GRCA staff at 905-885-8173.
