Lightning Cause of Fire That Heavily Damaged Home in Port Hope

It’s believed lightning caused a fire that heavily damaged a home in Port Hope on Monday, August 22, 2022.

At approximately 11 a.m. Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services responded to s structure fire located 34 Margaret Street in Port Hope.

Police were first on scene and rescued two small dogs from the residence.

Port Hope Police Inspector Katie Andrews said officers were at another call when they heard a, “loud shattering bang,” and moments later dispatched notified them of the house fire.

Two small dogs were in the backyard, but went into the back of the house, where a police officer rounded them up and placed them into a cruiser.

When fire crews arrived the side of the house was engulfed in flames that were extending into the roof area.

The fire extended through the roof area of the home causing extensive damage.

Fire Chief Jeff Ogden said it’s believed a lighting strike hit the gas meter, damaging the line and causing the fire.

The family including two adults and two children were not home at the time of the fire.

Damage is estimated at $500,000.
