Northumberland United Ways Backpacks for Kids Program Ready for the School Year

In Community, Local

Nearly 1,100 backpacks were filled with school supplies on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 at the Cobourg Lions Community Centre on Elgin Street in Cobourg.

Along with Northumberland United Way staff and volunteers members of the Northumberland Nighthawks U15 A team filled the backpacks.

Each year, as students prepare for their return to the classroom, Northumberland United Way is working hard to provide backpacks full of school supplies to children and families in our community. The backpacks are for students, JK through Grade 12 including 50 going to Ukraine students.

In previous years, our Backpacks for Kids Program has the support of numerous community members when it comes to help stuffing the backpacks. We are happy to say that we will once again, be able to invite the community back to the Lions Centre to see the program firsthand.

The start of a new school year is an exciting time for many students and parents, however, if you’re living in low income or are unemployed, it can lead to extra stress and worry. Since 2005, Northumberland United Way’s Backpacks for Kids program has supported nearly 20,000 students in Northumberland County.

This year’s Backpacks for Kids sponsors: Staples Cobourg, Cameco, Northumberland County Community and Social Services, Ganaraska Financial, Food 4 All Northumberland, SABIC, Cobourg Lions Community Centre, The Rotary Club of Northumberland Sunrise and individual donors.
