Northumberland Hills Hospital announces a one-month extension to apply for its annual Health Professions Scholarship.

While these applications are typically due by Feb. 15, the announcement noted the extension to 4 p.m. March 15 “in light of the many challenges students have endured through the prolonged pandemic.”

This scholarship was introduced by the hospital in 2003, to provide financial assistance to West Northumberland students who are pursuing careers in the health-care system – with the hope that these young people might consider returning to NHH as professionals when it came time to pursue their careers.

All applicants must be enrolled (or accepted for enrollment) in a full-time study program in fulfillment of this goal. Their applications for the Health Professions Scholarship will be evaluated on the basis of academic achievements, extracurricular activities, a testimonial explaining their interest in their chosen health-care field, and written references.

Last year’s winners were Lillie Donovan of Port Hope and Tovan Lew of Cobourg. St. Mary’s Secondary School alumna Donovan was headed to the University of Ottawa for an Honours Bachelor of Science program in Human Kinetics. With graduation from Cobourg Collegiate Institute looming, Lew was preparing for pre-med studies at one of three universities where his application had been accepted.

In 2022, two awards will be presented. And in recognition of the rising costs of post-secondary education, the prizes will be increased to $1,500 from $1,000. The winners will be announced at a spring meeting of the NHH board of directors.
