Northumberland County Receives Funding to Build an Improved Accessible Ramp at Courthouse

In City Hall

Northumberland County is pleased to announce plans are now underway to build a new accessible ramp at the County courthouse to improve access to the main entrance of the building. This project is funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund, which provides funding for capital projects that increase accessibility for people with disabilities in Canadian communities and workplaces.

This new exterior concrete ramp will connect the accessible parking spaces located in the south parking lot of 860 William Street in Cobourg to the main entrance of the courthouse building. The ramp will provide a safer, shorter and more direct path of travel for all community members of varying abilities to independently access courthouse services and participate in the justice process.

“Northumberland County strives to be a best practices leader of County government, and as part of this mission, we are committed to providing innovative solutions that ensure our services and facilities are inclusive and accessible for everyone,” states County Warden Bob Crate. “This new universal ramp at the County courthouse will help all community members have better access to important services in their community — from parents using baby strollers or people carrying rolling bags, to visitors and staff with mobility, agility or vision impairments. Increasing the accessibility of County services and facilities results in better service for all residents.”

This project is currently in the design phase with construction of the new ramp anticipated in 2022. Details regarding timelines for construction will be announced once confirmed.
