St. Anthony Students in Port Hope Learn About The True History of Residential Schools

In Editor Choice, Local

On Wednesday, October 20, 2021 students at St. Anthony Catholic Elementary School in Port Hope participated in a special walk.

As a Downie Wenjack Legacy School, the students in grades six, seven and eight are called to participate in ReconciliACTIONS. #WalkforWenjack.

“It is our opportunity to raise awareness of the true history of residential schools,” said teacher Shana Hayman.

The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund is part of Gord Downie’s legacy and embodies his commitment, and that of his family, to improving lives of First Peoples in Canada.

In collaboration with the Wenjack Family, the goal of the Fund is to continue the conversation that began with Chanie Wenjack’s residential school story, and to aid our collective reconciliation journey through a combination of awareness, education, and action.
