Volunteers Clean-Up The Ganny After Salmon Season Ends

In Local

Volunteers came out on Friday, October 1, 2021 to clean up the banks of the Ganaraska River in Port Hope.

With salmon fishing coming to an end in the river on September 30, the anglers have all left.

Unfortunately, some left their garbage behind.

Queenies Bake Shop owner Adam Pearson has been leading the charged for the clean-up for the past three years.

This years volunteers consisted of people young and not so young, families and members of the Port Hope Panthers.

Pearson said most of the anglers clean up, but some leave their garbage behind along with fishing line.

“We want to get it all picked up before it gets into the lake and possibly harm some of the wildlife.”

Pearson said it was the largest turnout of volunteers in the three years the event has been held.

Both side of the river were cleaned from Corbett’s dam to downtown.

The Hutton family likely had the youngest person to help with the clean since the event began three years ago.

The family included Dallas Hutton, her husband Ken and their children, daughter Maisy (age 2), and son Harrisson who was only two-months-old.

Dallas said there is a simple reason to clean-up along the river.

“It’s disgusting and I love Port Hope and I want it to be clean.”
