Northumberland United Way Staff Fill 1,000 Backpacks for Students

Northumberland United Way staff were busy on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at the Cobourg Lion’s Community Centre load backpacks for students.

Traditionally upwards of 50 volunteers and sponsors would help pack the backpacks for students from junior kindergarten to grade 12, but because of COVID, it was left up to a small group of staff from the Northumberland United Way and board members.

“We have a fantastic team,” said Chief Executive Officer of Northumberland United Way Bobbi Dawson.

Saying the group was like a “well oiled machine” things went so smoothly on Tuesday as approximately 1,000 backpacks were filled.

Pencil crayons, pens, binders, glue along with other items including masks were placed in each backpack on Tuesday.

Since 2005, Northumberland United Way’s Backpack for Kids program has supported more than 17,0000 students in Northumberland County whose families are on a low income or unemployed.

This years sponsors are: Staples Cobourg, Cameco, Northumberland County Community and Social Services, Ganaraska Financial, Northumberland Labour Council, Food 4 All Northumberland, SABIC, and the Cobourg Lions.
